GLP-1 Side Effects: What Is Common, What Is Serious, and What to Track

glp 1 side effects

You take your GLP-1 injection on a Tuesday evening. By Wednesday morning, you feel queasy. Your stomach hurts. You skip breakfast because nothing sounds good.

Normal, or not? Here is how to tell.

What most people feel in the first weeks

Most people on GLP-1 medications deal with some stomach discomfort early on. Your gut is adjusting to a medicine that slows down how quickly food moves through it. At first, it protests.

The most common things people notice:

  • Nausea, especially after eating and can usually be the most bothersome in the early weeks
  • Vomiting is less common than nausea, but then it happens .
  • Diarrhea or constipation ,it can go either way for different people
  • Stomach pain or bloating , a full, heavy feeling
  • Headache and mild dizziness can often occur from eating less than usual
  • Fatigue , more tired than normal, especially in the first couple of weeks

For most people, this settles within two to four weeks.

What helps: eat smaller meals more often, skip fatty or spicy food for now, drink water slowly through the day, and avoid lying down right after eating. Ask your doctor whether a light snack before your dose makes a difference.

Whether you are on a branded or generic version, the side effects are the same. The medicine inside is identical.

Keep your pen in the refrigerator. Indian summer heat can reach 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, and even a short stretch at those temperatures can damage the medicine with no visible sign that something is wrong. If power cuts are common in your area, this matters even more. Room temperature for brief periods may be on the label, but refrigeration from day one is the safer habit.

When to call your doctor that day

Some things are not adjustment symptoms. They need attention the same day.

Severe stomach pain that does not stop , especially if it spreads to your back and does not ease with rest. This could be pancreatitis, a swelling of the pancreas. It does not feel like ordinary nausea.

Yellowing of your skin or eyes. This can mean your liver or gallbladder is affected.

Sudden vision changes , blurry vision or any sudden loss of sight. Do not wait to see if it passes.

Fast heartbeat, shaking, sweating, or confusion. These may be signs of low blood sugar, more likely if you take other diabetes medicines alongside your GLP-1.

Swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat. This is an allergic reaction. Go to the emergency room.

A lump or swelling in your neck, or trouble swallowing. GLP-1 medicines carry a warning about rare thyroid tumors. Tell your doctor right away.

If a symptom is sudden, severe, or getting worse rather than getting better , call your doctor today.

What to write down before your appointment

“I felt sick” does not help your doctor much ,does it? But this does:

“Nausea every evening for 12 days. Started about 2 hours after my dose. Lasted around 3 hours. A small plain snack helped.”

For each side effect, note what it was, when it started, how long it lasted, how bad it felt on a 1-to-10 scale, what made it better or worse, and how often it happened. Your doctor can work with specifics. Guesses take longer.

Before you stop

Most side effects ease up slowly. A small number mean call your doctor today.

If cost is pushing you toward stopping, speak to your doctor first. Stopping suddenly can cause your weight and blood sugar to rise quickly. There may be options your doctor can suggest.

Track your symptoms, energy, meals, and questions so your doctor visit is clearer.
