Constipation, bloating and reflux while using GLP-1

constipation bloating reflux gut side glp1

What is it?

GLP-1 medicines slow the movement of food through your stomach and gut. This can cause hard stools, trapped gas, bloating and acid reflux.

What does it mean for me?

These side effects are common, especially after starting treatment or increasing your dose. They often improve within a few weeks. Large meals and lying down after eating can make them worse.

What should I do now?

  • Drink enough water to keep your urine pale yellow.
  • Eat smaller meals slowly and limit oily or spicy foods if they cause reflux.
  • Stay upright for 30 to 60 minutes after eating.

What should I watch for?

Watch for worsening constipation, painful bloating or frequent heartburn. Notice whether you can still eat, drink and pass stool normally. Do not change your dose yourself.

When should I get medical help?

Call your doctor for severe stomach pain, vomiting lasting over two days, or blood in your stool or vomit.

Get medical help promptly if you cannot keep food or water down, or bloating makes breathing or movement difficult.

Remember

Gut symptoms often improve, but severe pain, lasting vomiting or difficulty drinking needs medical attention.
